U14's - Match Report (04/10/09)
Crediton - Home (Won 22-0)
Sarries eased to a decisive win over a large and physical Crediton side that despite the scoreline indicates ensured that Sarries did not have everything their own way. With the majority of both playing sides going to school together at either Clyst Vale Community College or QE then this added a little spice and extra competition after ribbing each other and pre-match build up during the week.
Sarries forte was back on display with good communication, confidence and dynamic support play. Good passing, ball retention and complete game awareness by the Red and White squad ensured that they were the first to get points on the board. Ross Watts, on the end of a powerful break and pop pass from Hallum Curran, made it across the line dragging a couple defenders with him. Jack Hamlyn did not have his kicking boots on for the mornings work although his task was made hard due to the Crediton defence forcing Sarries to score out wide.
Excellent awareness and commitment to getting themselves to the breakdowns ensured that Adam Tregedeon, Seb Mould and Laurence Parker shone particularly during the fast paced game. This enabled ball to be cleared out and the next phase to be initiated. The dedication and tenacity of Man of the Match Tom Griffiths meant that he was always in the thick of things and making good yardage for his team. The backs linked well with the 9/10 combination of Alex Evens and Dominic Ditchburn making the decisions and working well in partnership releasing the back line with often devastating effect. Crediton closed the plays down but always seemed a little stretched.
Just outside their own 22 Sarries launched a back line attack with the ball whizzing out through the hands of Tom Pugsley and into the possession of Fionn Wright who received the ball at full tilt. The break down the wing saw Wright hand off two covering tacklers and step inside another. He was finally bought down 5M out from the try line but the support of David Kittow, Jack Hamlyn and Owen Mugford was there with immediate effect. With the Crediton defence building as Sarries maintained the control, it was left to Embery to burrow his way across the line under two tacklers to touchdown. The missed kick was on the half time whistle.
(Half Time 10-0)
Crediton started the second half very brightly with some strong running, prolonged possession and a healthy territorial advantage. Exeter Saracens defence was resolute and very impressive with devastating tackling and wonderful defensive kicks to relieve the pressure. Joe Street made a several well executed tackles especially at speed to halt the Crediton probing attacks. The telling play was a wonderful opportune kick from Griffiths which took play out of the Saracens half and put Crediton completely on their back foot. With the hoards of Red and White attackers flooding up field and into the visitors half, Street connected and made a further break before off loading to Hamlyn. Brought down just short then Mugford was available on his shoulder to receive and make it across the line to score a very well put together team try. Again with the try being forced out wide the kick was not secured.
The backs seemed to revel in the ball that they were getting, all provided by the hard work that the forwards were putting in. Josh Woodward and Ben Clapshaw put in the effort and made their presence felt at the breakdowns. After a sweet offload out the back of the hand from Ditchburn, Mugford was through a huge gap at speed and looked odds on to cross the line but he was unable to keep his feet with the last Crediton defender breathing down his neck. Again the support play was to pay dividends with Watts receiving the ball and go over for his second of the morning. This time the kick from Hamlyn was successful.
Exeter Saracens continued in the same vein with determination, vision, confident and well thought out rugby but Crediton were not to leach any further points and the game was closed out with Crediton back on the attack testing the unbreached Saracens defence.
