U18's Girls - Match Report (24/01/10)
Sherborne / Oakmedians - Away
Saracens girls section travelled up to Sherborne to play their first match
since December 13th. After the recent spell of bad weather it was good to
see the sun shining and two pitches with a very good playing surface.
Sarries faced the host club and Oakmedians from Bournemouth along with
players from Cullompton who combined with the hosts at u15 to make up a full
side and one lone u18 who had a busy afternoon playing for both Sarries and
the home side. Due to lack of numbers the u18 games were 13 a side but the
u15's were all played with the proper numbers.

Sarries older age group took to the pitch and played as if the had been
training and playing week in week out wwith out the disruption to the
playing programme of bad weather and Christmas holidays and took the lead
early on after some could interplay between forwards and backs which put
Steph Papp in under the posts for Carey Wellby to convert. With the forwards
dominating and the ball being passed around well a second try followed
quickly for Lucy Smith. Unfortunately it was a case of too much too soon for
Sarries and they started to pay the price for starting at such a high tempo
and they started to go off the boil. The organisation of the defensive line
went missing and coupled with some poor tackles opened the door to the
opposition who also started to believe that they could win the game.
Saracens weathered the storm and managed to regain some composure to take
control in the final minutes and held out for hard earned draw.

Sarries started this game as if they had gone to sleep. All the good play
from the previous game evaporated and a series of errors put the hosts on
the front foot and when a huge hole opened up in midfield they took full
advantage and broke through to score under the posts, fortunately the kick
was missed. Sarries started to claw their way back into the game but not
before a similar defensive lapse let the Pinks through to score under the
posts again and again fortunately the kick was missed. This spurred sarries
into life and although Sherborne made some excellent breaks this time
Sarries got back and put in some excellent try saving tackles to prevent any
further score in the first half. Saracens showed great character in the
second half and pulled themselves together and started to play as if they
wanted to win the game. They were rewarded when fly half Carey Wellby was
driven over under the posts and she converted her own try. Saracens then
sealed the victory when skipper Jordan Crook popped up in the centre and
broke through two tackles on halfway and sprinted clear to score under the
posts with carey Wellby adding the extras.
Jordan Crook had a good afternoon along with Carey Wellby who controlled the
game well at fly half and put in some good kicks. Steph Papp tackled well
and Anna Ledger did some good work in the lineouts and rucks but player of
the match went to prop Mica Evans who never stopped running and did some
really good work in the tight and loose.
